2020: a barkrun year in review

by Dan

Where to begin with a year like 2020? I think it’s fair to say we’ve had a rollercoaster of a year and we want the ride to stop.

I started my 2020 fitness journey in a good state. Not much running, other than the weekly parkrun with Maple, but weight training four times a week at the gym (including a personal trainer led session). This was backed up with circuit training and plenty of walks with Maple. I was busy planning out how to introduce running sessions across the week.

The WHO reported on social media that there was a cluster of pneumonia cases – with no deaths – in Wuhan, Hubei province.

Events worldwide quickly spiraled out of control. I ran my last parkrun of the year on the 14th March. The gym suspended opening and I wasn’t able to return. My fitness motivation fell off a cliff. Only 252 miles run for the year, the fewest since I started recording my activities in 2012. It really was a year to forget.

There were some positives though that I will expand via separate posts: I successfully found an exciting new job during a global pandemic, The Son graduated from secondary school and started university life, I found my fitness mojo again at the end of the year, and we sold our house to move from London onto into rural Hampshire.
