A typical parkrunday:

  1. Attempt to wake The Son.
  2. Fail to wake The Son.
  3. Attempt to wake The Son again.
  4. Fail to wake The Son again.
  5. Make final attempt to wake The Son.
  6. The Son tells me that he is staying home.

A good parkrunday:

  1. Attempt to wake The Son.
  2. Fail to wake The Son.
  3. Attempt to wake The Son again.
  4. Fail to wake The Son again.
  5. Make final attempt to wake The Son.
  6. The Son gets up and accompanies me to parkrun to join me for breakfast but does not run.

A great parkrunday:

  1. Attempt to wake The Son.
  2. Fail to wake The Son.
  3. Attempt to wake The Son again.
  4. Fail to wake The Son again.
  5. Make final attempt to wake The Son.
  6. The Son gets up and we run together at parkrun before going to the café for breakfast.

An epic parkrunday:

  1. Attempt to wake The Son.
  2. Fail to wake The Son.
  3. Attempt to wake The Son again.
  4. Fail to wake The Son again.
  5. Make final attempt to wake The Son.
  6. The Son gets up and he tries to take down his PB at parkrun.

This parkrunday:

  1. Look out the window and it’s pouring with rain.
  2. Do not attempt to wake The Son and leave him fast asleep.
  3. Get soaked running parkrun.
  4. Join friends for breakfast at the café.
  5. Get home to find The Son in full on ‘SON ANGRY, SON SMASH’ mode.
  6. Drive back to the café at the park so The Son can eat breakfast.
  7. Deal with a stroppy pre-teen for the rest of the day.

Lesson learnt? No matter what’s going on, wake the little monster to let him make up his own mind.
