Janathon 2014 – Day 4: Golden Slumbers

by Dan

Big sleep, onsen, the last shop and a tempo run.

Our last full day with the in-laws in Ube and The Son spent most of the morning gently snoring in his bed. I should have done the same but he insisted on switching rooms so I had the bedroom without any curtains, with just traditional Japanese paper doors to pull in front of the windows, and the sun light woke me up. Mrs Dan has been busy working each night working on a key work presentation so she wanted to be up later than me.

The son chose our activity for the day and we headed out to an onsen (hot spring baths) to bathe and relax. There’s always something disconcerting about bathing naked in a large room of Japanese men but I have gradually become used to it over the years. We stayed for lunch and then popped into a few shops (book store, drug store and supermarket) so The Son & Mrs Dan could stock up of Japanese goods to bring home.

I joined Mrs Dan for a run along the beach without stamping my feet into pools of water this time. After making sure she was safely home, I carried on for an out & back tempo run at roughly 9 minute mile marathon pace but felt really comfortable so pushed onto near 8 minute mile pace for the last couple of km.

Tomorrow night we fly from Ube to Tokyo Haneda for a one night hotel stay near Narita airport and then our flight from Narita home to Heathrow on Monday. After my training plan rejig, I have a 4 mile easy run scheduled for tomorrow and then Monday is a rest day. Tuesday I am back at work and will be fighting jet lag and heading out for a lunchtime training run.

Janathon 2014:
