Death Machine

Death Machine

School run obstacle course, missed call, legs spinning and a day at home.

The most dangerous time to go out for a run? Not when it’s dark. Not when it’s cold. Not when it’s icy. During the school run.

My schedule called for an 8 mile run with 6 miles at marathon pace.  I was working from home, which meant the biggest gap in my diary was the ‘just over an hour’ I had between seeing Ken off to school and the first conference call of the day. This also meant that I would be out running during the mayhem of the school run.

The first problem was that I didn’t have enough time to run 8 miles unless I did them all at my marathon pace of approx. 5 minutes per km. I could have just dropped the mileage but thought screw that and ran all 8 miles at marathon pace.

The second, and most hazardous problem, was the lethal obstacle course caused by all the kids & parents. Young children weaved across the path on their scooters little death machine, parents with buggies walked side-by-side so the path was blocked, parents stood in the middle of the pathway chatting and teenagers slunk along texting while listening to music.

All of those pale into insignificance when compared to the problem of parents double parking their cars or pulling up on zebra crossings or parking on the yellow zig-zag no stopping lines so that precious Tarquin doesn’t have to walk more than 5 metres to the school gate. These people make my blood boil at the best of times but trying to negotiate the 4×4’s blocking the roads was just ridiculous.

I knew it was going to be a nightmare so I didn’t take my iPod with me for this run. I don’t listen to music when I run but occasionally I do head out with a podcast, mainly when it’s a long slow run and I am by myself.

Thankfully I made it round without injury, although I was whacked on the shoulder by the bag of the before mentioned texting teenager as she randomly veered into me, and I was comfortable at the pace. However, I did miss my first conference call of the day but it wasn’t an important call and they probably didn’t miss me.
