There is nothing like the gentle stillness of a household all deep asleep. That is unless the household were meant to be up and about 45 minutes earlier and had not slept through their alarm clocks. In a scene worthy of John Cleese in Clockwise, we were all bouncing around the house trying to get ready. Then all the power suddenly went out. The burglar alarm went mental. We all just stopped and stared at each other wordlessly trying to compute what the hell was going on.
In the end I drove Mrs Dan to the train station so she would only be a little bit late and then came home to the still blaring alarm to try and figure out what was going on. Our neighbours appeared to check that we were ok and they confirmed that their power had gone out as well. A quick call to Southern Electric went through to their automated notice that their was a power cut in the local area.
There was no way that I could work from home with no mechanism to halt the alarm (aside from attacking it with a sledgehammer) so I packed our stuff into the car and we decamped to our local Costa for a couple of hours. I used their wi-fi to work while The Son made a start on his homework whilst enjoying some hot chocolate and cake. Southern Electric removed their outage message around 11am so we made our way home and sneaked into the house (just in case the neighbourhood mob were out with their pitch folks to confront the alarm house).
After all that fun I managed to get out for another 7 mile run but this time I threw caution to the wind and ran my normal route in reverse.
