It’s cold outside at the moment – very, very cold! If you are in the UK then you are probably more than aware of this chilling fact. The warmth of my office was so cosy this morning and I was busy looking at pictures of cats on the interwebs working and I could not really go out there because what I was doing at that very moment was a bazillion times more important that running. I eventually zipped my man suit up and dragged my sorry self across the Siberian wasteland road to the gym office our building. The treadmills were all unused and I gave them a wistful glance before heading outside for a proper run.
Today I ran through Canary Wharf until I reached the River Thames and then followed it until I reached Tower Bridge. I did have the foresight to bring my running tights, extra layers, and gloves with me in my gym bag and they were all needed today. My original plan was to go for an easy run but I wanted to be warm so switched to a tempo run instead. On the route out I looked for other runners ahead of me and mentally pictured them as someone to chase down in a race until I eventually overtook them.
Once I gave the bridge a quick kick then it was back the same way and at a slightly faster pace as well. I did pass one runner on the way back, a guy huffing & puffing his way along, and he decided that he was not going to get overtaken so went sprinting off ahead of me. A few minutes later I serenely passed him as he stood slumped against a wall trying to catch his breath. I wanted to put my thumb against my nose and waggle my hand at him but that would have been immature. Well, actually, I couldn’t give a toss if it was immature but equally he was a fellow runner and deserved some respect even if he had been bit of a numpty trying to race me.
It was a great 8 mile run along a (cold) picture perfect River Thames. Later in the day I realised that I should have started my marathon training schedule this week but had somehow mixed up my dates and thought it was the next week. Doh!
