parkrun #6

by Dan

I was finally able to take The Son to Gunnersbury parkrun and he joined me for his very first 5k run. He has participated in a couple of 1 or 2 miles fun runs at events where I have run the 10k race but we have never really run together other than the odd training run at the local park. I stressed to him that he should pace himself and not go sprinting off with the crowd at the start, which he successfully managed as we ran together near the rear of the group. I was impressed that he made it to the 2k point with ease and we had a short walk break before running past the half way point to get our time so far shouted out.

The Son picked up the pace a bit as we ran the downhill grass section again but I made him adopt a run-walk-run strategy as I could see the warm temperature getting to him. He had enough energy left in the tank for a sprint up to the finish line, which he crossed just before me much to his delight.

This has to rank up there as possibly my favourite all time run and it was great to have The Son taking part. He really enjoyed himself and has vowed to return with the aim of lowering his time under 30 minutes.
