Janathon 2014 – Day 5: I’ll Be Back

by dan

No bad people!

Hotel lunch, Boston medal, the final run and a sad goodbye.

Our last day in Ube and our last day staying with my in-laws. They have been fantastic hosts, as always, and it’s going to be a real shame saying goodbye again.

Today we went for lunch at a small hotel that sits on top of a coastal hill, where you can take in stunning views of the sea and the surrounding area. The hotel has a small room dedicated to the life and paintings of the former Japanese international marathon runner Hideo Hamamura:

“As one of the top Japanese distance runners of the fifties, he represented his country in the marathon at the Olympics and the Asian Games. He was 16th in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne and fifth in the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo.

In the United States, he is best known as the winner of the 1955 Boston marathon. His winning time, 2:18.22 was a course record and one of the fastest times in history (unfortunately the course was found to be short in 1957).” (source IAAF Atheltics).

My last run in Japan consisted of a light jog down & along the beach with Mrs Dan before I added a couple of miles to make it an easy 4 miles total. Tomorrow is my allocated rest day and I will be back to my marathon training plan with 5 miles easy, including 5 strides, on Tuesday when I will no doubt be jet-lagged.

Janathon will continue through a series of stretches on the flight back to Heathrow.
